We’re all searching for the ever-elusive fountain of youth. If nothing can actually turn back the clock, we at least want to look younger. But do any of the lucrative anti-ageing beauty treatments actually work?
Fill Your Face
Fillers are a popular way to stave off wrinkles – and the most common type of facial filler is Botox, an injectable treatment which uses Botulinum toxin to paralyse muscles in certain areas of your face. It’s not strictly a filler as it doesn’t plump the skin up; it simply stops you from using the frown muscles which cause lines to appear on your face. It’s regarded as a safe, effective treatment and has been used for some time with few side effects. Other facial fillers include Restylane and Perlane – both the same substance but only in different concentrations. These can visibly reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and lines.
Do Botox and Fillers Work?
These type of filler injections can certainly improve the way your face looks, reducing wrinkles and making you look younger. Unfortunately, they aren’t a magic wand. They fill the wrinkles and plump up the skin but the wrinkles won’t disappear forever, you just won’t be able to see them. The effects may only last a few months and then it’s back to the salon or learn to live with them!
A Collagen Facial
Collagen is a protein found naturally in the body. Around 75% of your skin is collagen, and 30% of the rest of your body, which makes it an ideal ingredient for skin products! As we age, we lose collagen and so the aim of a collagen facial is quite literally to put back what we’ve lost. Collagen facials come in a wide variety of formats, but can include a face mask, a massage treatment, even using lasers and electrodes. It’s also possible to have collagen injected under the skin, to plump the skin up and iron out wrinkles.
Do Collagen Facials Work?
They seem to work better on more mature skin of 30 plus but then it’s unlikely that anyone much younger would be looking at having anti-ageing treatment anyway. The effect will only be temporary. Likewise, a collagen injection won’t delete your wrinkles for good, but can reduce their appearance, making you look and feel younger!
Electrostimulation
Electrostimulation facials are intensive treatments often recommended for mature skins. They use harmless electrical currents to tighten and tone up any of those areas that are seeing the signs of ageing or suffering from wrinkles and fine lines. It’s a good treatment for anyone who wants to firm up facial contours, improve lymphatic drainage and soften facial skin.
Electrostimulation treatments can be used on specific areas of your skin, and usually involve a deep-cleansing facial and a mild electric current which is applied to your face and ‘pushes’ the products into your skin with a small roller. Cleansing and moisturising masks can also be added in as part of the treatment, as can blackhead treatments.
Does Electrostimulation Work?
Well, this type of therapy has been with us for decades, and some people swear by their regular facial. The downside is that they are inevitably an expensive treatment, and the effects will wear off if you don’t have regular sessions. Like most beauty treatments, it will probably make your skin feel wonderful but it’s not going to physically alter your skin to make it permanently look younger.
These treatments, and the everyday anti-ageing creams do undoubtedly have an effect on the way your skin looks, and in some cases this effect can be quite dramatic. Unfortunately, in most cases, it doesn’t last! Ageing happens to us all, and to be honest what your mother told you is probably the best advice. Drink lots of water, eat well, get enough sleep, wear sunscreen…and hope for the best!
